Aloe vera-honey combination may reduce tumor progression

Both honey and aloe vera are known to have immunomodulatory, anticancer, and antioxidant properties. A study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food found that both of these ingredients can inhibit the growth of cancerous tumors, albeit through different mechanisms.

  • The study used Walker 256 carcinoma-bearing rats.
  • The animals were divided into six groups:
    • Control-untreated (C)
    • Tumor-untreated (W)
    • Treated after tumor induction (WA)
    • Control-treated (A)
    • Treated before tumor induction (AW)
    • Treated before and after tumor induction (AWA)
  • The researchers measured proteolysis and the level of oxidative stress in the animals’ liver, muscle, and myocardial tissues, as well as in the tumor itself.
  • The results suggest that the treatment with aloe and honey affected the tumor in different ways. It promoted oxidative stress in the tumor tissues in a therapeutic context.

The researchers concluded that aloe vera and honey could inhibit the growth of cancer cells by promoting oxidative stress, resulting in damage to the tumor.
