Black rice is healthier than white rice as it contains more antioxidants, proteins, and dietary fiber, and less sugar. A study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food investigated the effect of supplementing with germinated waxy black rice (GWBR) on mice with high-fat-diet-induced obesity.
- The researchers divided the mice into four groups:
- Normal diet (ND)
- High-fat diet (HFD)
- Test group supplemented with 2.5 percent GWBR
- Test group supplemented with 5 percent GWBR
- Supplementation with GBR reduced body weight gain and lipid accumulation in the liver and adipose tissue compared to the control group given the high-fat diet.
- GWBR also reduced triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in serum while increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels.
- The mRNA levels of transcriptional factors, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma, CCAAT enhancer-binding protein (C/EBP)-alpha, C/EBP-beta, sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c, and related genes, including adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein, fatty acid synthase, and lipoprotein lipase, were observed to have been markedly lowered in the GWBR groups.
- On the other hand, lipolytic enzymes, such as hormone-sensitive lipase, adipose TG lipase, and carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1, and uncoupling protein 2 mRNA levels were considerably higher in the animals that received supplementation with GWBR.
The researchers concluded that germinated waxy black rice has anti-obesity effects that decrease the accumulation of fat and promote lipolysis in mice with HFD-induced obesity.
